In the heart of downtown Florence, in Piazza Santa Maria Novella, just a few steps from the Renaissance church bearing the same name, lies the J.K.Place, a charming boutique hotel with a home-from-home atmosphere. You'll notice this immediately you enter the townhouse hallway and find a reception area which is discreetly tucked away in the hotel's library. Beyond this a large finely-furninshed but welcoming breakfast room is daily stocked with complimentary refreshments. Two lounge or bar areas add to that pied-a-terre feel, decorated with a calm sophisticated mix of modern and antique furniture. Not quite a gentlemen's club feel as there are some fun and frivolous touches too. Stone staircases (or a small lift) usher you to the rooms which on several floors surround an inner courtyard. These rooms, it must be said, are on the small side, though the wonderful bathrooms may well be where you'll spend much of your time. Best of all, on the roof is an open air terrace, with a partial view of the Duomo's sunset tiles, and relaxing loungers, oil lamps and a menu serving cocktails and snacks. On a weekend stay this terrace was mostly unoccupied, and is perfect for a pre-dinner drink or nightcap. The hotel is a hotspot for the fashion crowd though it's understated atmosphere means you'll feel right at home. The Irish concierge is friendly and helpful with a great eye to matching guests with the right eating or drinking spots in Florence.
