The Taj Mahal Hotel Mumbai is truly the jewel in the crown of one of India’s finest cities. Mumbai is not for the faint hearted, though its chaotic delights are well worth the effort. And whether exploring the city or simply using it as a gateway to delve into the rest of India, the Taj is a worthy destination in itself.

Still undergoing restoration since the horrific terrorist attacks in November 2008, the tower wing of the hotel is fully functional and the older heritage wing will soon be completed. However, as a guest, restoration work is not even noticeable as the staff go out of their way to make your stay exceedingly comfortable. Very little compares with the Taj’s devotion to customer service, which on a sadder note was exemplified in the attacks when several staff members lost their lives while protecting guests. Signs of those days are evident (as in most of the rest of India) in the security measures when entering the hotel. All bags and personal items are scanned in a polite procedure which seems more secure than that at for instance, the main train station (also targeted in the attacks.)

Once inside the Taj the experience fully begins as the gracious cool lobby gives way to a shopping arcade, numerous bars, restaurants, and a nightclub. Behind the heritage wing is a wonderful swimming pool one can breakfast at, swim gently in or simply laze by and watch the hawks circling high above. The rooms are welcoming and fitted out with every amenity, though - our current hotel bugbear - no free Wi-Fi is provided. Get a room with a sea view – sipping a gin and tonic looking out at a sunset over the famed Gateway of India is an inspiring experience. The Taj chain sets the standard by which many other hotels are measured. Here in Mumbai, where it all began, is the perfect place to experience the Taj effect.
